ODIN Privacy Notice
The Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska, on behalf of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln ("UNL"), and Grouptheory, Inc. ("Grouptheory") provide the ODIN participant mobile application and related services (collectively, the "Service"). UNL and Grouptheory are referred to collectively as the "ODIN Providers."
This Privacy Notice describes how data is collected, stored, used, and shared through the Service. ODIN is used in research studies, and the data collected may vary based on the study in which you participate (the "Study"). Your Study Team will provide information about the Study and its specific data collection.
By using ODIN, you acknowledge this Privacy Notice.
1. Direct Identifiers
Depending on the Study, ODIN may collect information such as your name, signature, contact information, verification information, or payment information through Study consent, verification, support, or payment features.
Other App data is generally indexed using a Study-issued coupon number or similar code rather than your name. Your Study Team may separately maintain information linking that code to you.
2. Study-Issued Coupon Number
When you begin using the App, you use a coupon number or similar code issued for your Study. ODIN uses this code to index App and Study data.
The code does not necessarily make your data anonymous. Your Study Team may maintain a separate record linking the code to your identity, and some collected data may be identifiable when combined with other information.
3. Data Collected
The App collects data needed to provide, support, secure, evaluate, and improve the Service and to support the Study. Depending on the Study and the permissions you grant, this may include:
- Responses to in-app questions, including multiple-choice and free-text responses
- Response, notification, and App activity timestamps
- GPS coordinates, precise or background location, and location-related information
- Bluetooth, beacon, and other proximity information, including signal strength and nearby device or Study codes
- Motion, physical-activity, step-count, wearable, health, or physiological information, such as heart-rate data
- Consent, eligibility, verification, referral, and payment or incentive records
- App activity needed to operate and troubleshoot the Service
- Basic technical and operational records, such as App version, device type, operating system, time zone, messaging tokens, and error or diagnostic logs
- Information generated from collected data, such as engagement measures, sensor or context classifications, rule-trigger events, summaries, forecasts, or reports
Not every Study collects every category. Some collection may occur in the background when enabled for the Study and permitted by your device settings.
4. How Data Is Used
The ODIN Providers may use App data to:
- Operate, support, secure, and troubleshoot the Service
- Support the Study and its authorized data collection
- Deliver Study questions, reminders, messages, resources, and notifications
- Trigger questions or other actions based on time, location, proximity, activity, wearable information, or previous responses
- Provide authorized Study Team dashboards, exports, reports, summaries, forecasts, and other Study outputs
- Administer consent, eligibility, verification, referrals, and payments or incentives where used
- Evaluate and improve App performance, stability, and functionality
The Study Team may use Study data for the research purposes described in the materials provided to you for the Study.
The ODIN Providers do not sell participant data or use it for third-party advertising, unrelated commercial profiling, or third-party behavioral targeting.
5. Data Sharing and Disclosure
ODIN may make participant-level App data available to the Study Team and other authorized research personnel. This data may be indexed by your coupon number or similar code. The Study Team may separately have information linking that code to you.
ODIN may share data with service providers used to host, operate, secure, and support the Service, such as providers of cloud infrastructure, push notifications, diagnostics, technical support, payment processing, or wearable and health-platform services. These providers are permitted to use the data only to provide their services.
Study data may be shared with other authorized researchers or organizations as described in your Study materials and permitted by applicable requirements.
The ODIN Providers may disclose data if required by law or if necessary to protect the Service, users, the Study, or others.
6. Data Storage and Security
ODIN may store data on your device and on Service servers. Study data may also be stored in authorized exports, analysis systems, backups, or research datasets.
The ODIN Providers use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect data collected through the App. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and absolute security cannot be guaranteed.
Data retention and deletion may vary by Study. Contact the Study Team for information about the practices that apply to your Study.
7. Data Not Collected Through the App
ODIN is not designed to collect through the App:
- The contents of phone calls or text messages
- Personal email or address-book contents
- Grades or transcripts
- Social Security numbers
- Unrelated files stored on your device
8. Your Choices
Depending on your Study and device, you may be able to:
- Decline a question or optional permission
- Change device permissions or connected-service permissions
- Stop using the App
- Delete the App from your device
- Contact the Study Team about your data or withdrawing from the Study
Disabling a permission or deleting the App may affect data collection, question delivery, Study participation, or compensation. Deleting the App does not by itself delete data already stored on Service servers or held by the Study Team.
9. Changes to This Notice
The ODIN Providers may update this Privacy Notice from time to time to reflect changes in functionality, data practices, or legal requirements. Updates may be provided through the App or another reasonable method.
